While a simple list of "do's" and "don'ts" might work for a four year old, this won't cut it with older children. You need to explain your values and why you hold to them.
More importantly, numerous surveys indicate that this is what children actually want from their parents!
If you are like most parents, you have searched for a way to discuss and teach values and how to make the tough decisions your child will face in life.
By using an open-discussion or a structured game format, Deal With It lowers resistance to the idea of talking about morals and decision-making. The concept of Deal With It is simple and yet profound.
A real-life dilemma and six possible ways of responding are presented for youth and parent(s) or youth leaders/teachers to consider.
Each participant chooses the answer that most closely matches the way they think the situation should be handled.
Youth participants are given the opportunity to state their answer and why they think it is the best approach.
Parents/youth-leaders simply state if this approach (answer) matches their own. If not, those youth players are allowed a 'second chance' to state what they believe is their parent's/leader's approach. Parents/leaders then state their answer and why they feel it is the best solution.
Teaching values is easier when you use Deal With It as your guide.
These are provided to assist in pointing out pitfalls and things to consider, and to assist parents in relating observations and life-experiences.
The sensitive subjects of premarital sex, STD's, pregnancy, parental divorce, and suicide are also included, but are discreetly included as it's own set for your optional use.
